So I joined the 2009 Crochet a Block a month group, and noticed that in the first few months the designs came from a limited pool of sources. So I thought I'd have a go myself. This is first proper written up design, so please let me have your comments and feedback:
Violet 12” block
The example was made with 100% cotton double knitting yarn on a 4.5mm hook to produce a square measuring 8” . These are the same measurements I get when following 12” square patterns designed for worsted weight yarn and a 5mm (H) or 5.5mm (I) hook.
American terminology used throughout.
Rnd 1: ch 5, join into ring with slip stitch into first ch.
Rnd 2: ch 2 (counts as first sc), sc into ring 15 times, join with slip stitch into 2nd chain.
Rnd 3: ch 3 (counts as first dc), * hdc, sc, hdc, dc * , then repeat from * to * twice, hdc, sc, hdc, join with slip stitch into 3rd chain.
Rnd 4: ch 5 (counts as sc plus ch 3 loop), * sk1, dc, ch 3, sk1, sc, ch 3 *, repeat from * to * twice, sk1, dc, ch 3, join with slip stitch into 2nd chain. This should give you 8 chain loops.
Rnd 5: ch 2 (counts as sc), * (hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc in chain loop space) sc in next stitch * repeat from * to * six times, (hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc in chain loop space), join with slip stitch into 2nd chain.
Rnd 6: ch 6 (counts as first dc plus ch 3 loop), * sk 2, sc, ch 3, sk 2, dc, ch 3 *, repeat from * to * six times, sk2, sc, ch 3, join with slip stitch into 4th chain.
Rnd 7: Same pattern as round 5 – ch 2 (counts as sc), (hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc in each chain loop) and sc into each stitch between loops, join with slip stitch into 2nd chain. Suggested colour change point.
Rnd 8: Join new colour with sc into a tr of previous round. * ch 4, dc into next tr, ch 6 (this will become corner), dc into tr, ch 4, sc into tr, ch 4, sc into tr *, repeat from * to * three times, replacing last sc with a slip stitch into the first sc. This should give you 16 chain loops.
Rnd 9: slip stitch into chain space, * (dc 4, ch 1 in 4 chain loop) (dc 4, ch 3, dc 4, ch 1 in 6 chain loop) (dc 4, ch 1 in next two 4 chain loops) *, repeat from * to * three times, join with slip stitch into first dc.
Rnd 10: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into each space and dc of previous round, in the 3 chain corner loop (dc 2, ch 2, dc 2), join with slip stitch into 3rd chain. This should give you 28 dc on each side. Suggested colour change point.
Rnd 11: Join new colour with sc into last dc before a corner. In corner chain space dc, tr 5, dc. Along side, * (sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc) twice * , sc 3, repeat from * to * reaching corner with sc in last stitch of the side. Repeat corner and side three times for other 3 sides, joining round with slip stitch into first sc.
Rnd 12: Slip stitch into 1st corner tr of previous round, sc,* ch 2, sk 1, sc, ch 2, sk1, sc, ch 3, sc into next tr, ch 3, dc into next sc, ch 3, sc into next tr, ch 3 , dc into next sc, ch 2, sk 2, dc into next sc, ch 3, sc into next tr, ch 3, dc into next sc, ch 3, sc in next tr, ch3, sc into 1st corner tr *. Repeat from * to * three times, replacing final stitch with joining slip stitch into first sc.
Measure your square at this point. The final round can be adjusted to fit, either by repeats, or by substituting dc or tr stitches for the suggested sc. If using taller stitches, insert at least one chain at each corner point to reduce the roundness of the final row corners.
Rnd 13: ch 2 (counts as first sc), sc once into each stitch, and sc once for each ch in chain space on previous round.
Finish off.
